As of June 30, 2021, according to the Banque centrale du Luxembourg (BCL), credit institutions in the Grand Duchy employed 26,293 people in the country, a figure up slightly over one quarter and over one year.

The number of people employed in the banking sector in Luxembourg has hovered around 26,000 since the start of 2016, compared to only 16,000 at the start of the 1990’s.

With 26,293, the number of employees in the banking sector increased by 148 compared to the previous quarter and by 72 over one year (+ 0.3%).

By the end of June 2020, just after confinement, banks had lost 417 employees, or 1.6% of their workforce compared to June 2019. The figure for the second quarter of 2021 is the first increase recorded over one year since December 2019. Of these 26,293 employees, 55.28% are men.

According to the latest figures available provided by the BCL, which relate to the month of July, Luxembourg has a total of 126 credit institutions from 26 different countries, of which 21 are from Germany, 15 from China, 14 from France. and 12 from Switzerland. Nine of these banks are Luxembourgish.
